Developing Successful Orientations and Retreats Does working with new selectboard/council members overwhelm you? This full day workshop on Thursday, Nov. 15 will focus on the manager’s role in developing and delivering successful orientations for elected officials, and in holding retreats for boards of selectmen, councils, and citizen groups. Participants will work in small teams to develop effective models and check lists of do’s and don’ts for each event. Trainer Bob Stripling is a retired city manager and is a frequent instructor at the Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia and other municipal management trainings throughout Virginia. (ICMAPractice Group 8 – Policy Facilitation and Implementation) On Friday, Nov. 16 Franklin Town Administrator Jeff Nutting and retired city and town manager and now owner of Community Paradigm Associates consulting firm, Bernie Lynch, will share their experiences with developing and implementing successful retreats. Nutting has been holding retreats with his own council and other community’s boards of selectmen for over two decades and will offer practical tips on achieving good outcomes. Lynch works with large and small communities, towns and schools, planning boards to town councils and will discuss his experiences. Dinner on Thursday evening will be at Johnny’s in downtown Amherst. You will have a choice between a few entrees. A room block has been reserved at Hotel UMASS.
